Taking care of your child’s smile is our focus, and we’re trained in treating growing and developing teeth and understand the unique requirements that come with them. Our team is skilled in helping even the most anxious patient feel comfortable and at ease during their visit.

At Your Cleaning Appointment

Our pediatric dentists recommend routine cleanings twice a year to maintain optimal oral hygiene and a happy smile. To help your child understand each step of a dental cleaning, our team uses a “tell, show, do” approach. Our dentists will demonstrate how to properly brush, floss, and create a dental health regimen to help them grow into a healthy smile. This time with our dental team provides an opportunity for discovery where our dental team discusses each instrument used and helps your child feel more comfortable with the process. These cleanings allow for our dental team to locate and identify any potential problems or areas that need special attention. The goal of routine cleanings is to help your child have healthy smiles for life!

Why are Regular Dental Cleanings Important for Kids?

Routine dental cleanings are essential for prevention. These appointments help identify areas that may need extra attention, and also focus on education to teach healthy hygiene habits and smart snacking and diet habits.

Dental cleanings in our office provide a deeper clean than one can achieve at home. We recommend dental cleanings twice a year for our pediatric patients. Our dental team gets into the nooks and crannies of your teeth and their chewing surfaces to help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Catching tooth decay or potential problems early can help prevent dental issues down the road and help your child achieve the smile of their dreams!

Kids Dental Cleanings FAQ

When Can Toothpaste be Used to Clean a Child’s Teeth?

As soon as your child has a tooth erupt, you can begin using toothpaste. For children 0 to 3 years of age, use a smear of toothpaste, approximately the size of a grain of rice. Once they reach 3 years of age, they can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

What is a Fluoride Treatment?

A fluoride treatment is a quick and easy application done right in our office to strengthen your child’s teeth. The application of fluoride is simple – our dentists brush the fluoride varnish or gel directly to your child’s teeth and it dries within minutes. Following the fluoride application, have your child avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes.

Can Cavities be Avoided?

There are actually several ways to help your child avoid cavities and tooth decay. They can decrease their risk by:

  • Avoiding sugary snacks and foods
  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing daily
  • Getting a fluoride treatment during a routine cleaning
  • Maintaining a healthy diet!

How Often Should We Change a Toothbrush?

Our dentists recommend changing your child’s toothbrush every 3 months. Toothbrushes can become worn out and not as effective as they once were, so replacing them will help maintain optimal oral health. If your child has gum disease, we recommend replacing your child’s toothbrush every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure your child is using a clean toothbrush.
