The AAPD recommends a child see the dentist by his or her first birthday, or six months after the first tooth erupts. For many children, this will simply be a “look-see” visit. Most often, this initial exam is more of an informative session for parents to gather information on how to care for their little one’s teeth, as good oral care begins long before a full primary dentition is present.

Dentistry has been transformed by many changes over the past several years, such as technology, play areas that allow children to relax prior to entering the treatment area, and an open bay concept (in which children are able to see each other having their teeth “cleaned”).

It is extremely important to be as positive as possible about dental visits. A parent’s negative feelings or childhood experiences can easily be transferred to children if they pick up on unpleasant words or attitudes.

We take pride in our approach to helping children through the first dental experience, so if you aren’t sure what to say about the upcoming visit, just let us handle it!
